Kyoto, April

It was never
meant for a plinth.

Every car is signed off on the road that runs past the works, in whatever weather that morning happens to bring.

Inside

Two seats, and
nothing you
do not need.

There is no screen in the centre of the dashboard. The things you change while driving are the things you can find without looking.

Driver oriented binnacle Angled seven degrees toward the driver, with the rev counter dead centre.

Powertrain

Naturally aspirated,
and staying that way.

A flat plane crank V8 that pulls to 9,200 rpm with no turbo to wait for. The induction runs through the bulkhead so you hear the intake before the exhaust.

The courtyard,
every April.

The tree by the paint shop is older than the works. Cars leaving in spring go out under it, which is how the edition got its name.

The finish

Eleven days on
one body shell.

The paint is the reason the edition is ninety cars and not nine hundred. Everything below is done by hand, by four people.

01

Ground and blocked

Six coats of primer, each flatted back by hand until a straight edge held anywhere on the shell shows no light under it.

02

Pearl laid wet on wet

Three pearl coats within the same shift, because a pearl that dries between passes shows a line you can see from across a room.

03

Camellia by brush

The blossom is painted, not applied. Two artists, four days, then lacquered flush so you can run a hand across it and feel nothing.

Ninety cars.
Sixty two remain.

Allocation opens to registered owners first, on the fourteenth of October. A specification consultation is held at the works in Aichi before any order is confirmed.
